BIPOC AFFINITY

Dismantling internalized racism and finding joy in community

BIPOC are not a monolith, and the experiences of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color vary widely within each of these labels and even more so under the category of “People of Color.” And we still have healing and work to do together.

This is a space to process our experiences working in the outdoor industry, uncover the ways that we may unintentionally perpetuate racism, and remind ourselves that we belong in outdoors spaces. Any world-building, planning and ideating that impacts or concerns interracial relationships and spaces is always done in interracial solidarity.

Any money made from white affinity work pays for both Ella’s labor and for Steph’s work in BIPOC affinity. We don’t ask BIPOC individuals to pay for our services, so we rely on white people and predominantly white organizations to fund our work.

1:1 BIPOC Coaching

BIPOC coaching is a one-on-one or small group process designed to primarily support experiences of BIPOC folks, unpack and process racial abuse, dissect and dismantle our internalized white supremacy, and find joy and hope in the struggle for social justice. This is a space where we hold validation and accountability side-by-side – where pain and joy converge to begin a process of healing. If you’ve ever been left reeling after an outdoor experience, personal and professional, and didn’t know who to talk to about it or how, this is probably the space for you.

Important Caveats:

  1. I am not a therapist and this is not therapy. I am not trained to be a therapist. I have been a brown woman all my life and worked in many roles where I offer guidance and support without judgement or agenda and help steer people on their own paths by walking alongside them, literally and figuratively.
  2. Expect that I will make mistakes. I am on my own lifelong antiracism journey dismantling oppression within myself and as a result of my privileged identities have blind spots. Expect me to hear your feedback, own my mistakes, apologize, and do better.
  3. Expect non-closure. We can’t fix hundreds of years of systemic oppression in an hour, or six. This work is ongoing and there are no easy answers to any of it.

What’s It Like Working with Steph?

“One-on-one coaching with Steph was a restorative experience after a tough field season. As a team, she and I examined a complex tangle of interpersonal conflicts through lenses of race, gender, and moral integrity. Steph used her experience as a Woman of Color in outdoor leadership to connect and relate to me, and her skills as a facilitator to provide a thoughtful, curious, empathetic, affirming, humorous, and empowering space for collaborative healing. By the end, I had shaken off a shroud of self-doubt, gained mental clarity around the conflict that had occurred, and recovered my sense of values and self-confidence.”
